How to choose the right LED Display?

Choosing the right LED Display requires balancing pixel pitch (resolution) with your viewing distance, and matching the screen's brightness and weatherproofing to its environment. Fine-pitch screens (<2.5 mm) are ideal for close indoor viewing, while larger pitches (>5 mm) are cost-effective for outdoor venues. Please check below several Core factors to choose the right LED Display.

1. Indoor vs. Outdoor Use
• Indoor: Requires lower brightness (800–1,500 nits) to prevent eye strain and a lower protection rating (e.g., IP20) since it's sheltered from the elements.
• Outdoor: Requires high brightness (4,000+ nits) to combat direct sunlight and a high weather-resistance rating (IP65) to protect against dust and rain.

2. Viewing Distance & Pixel Pitch
Pixel pitch is the distance between individual LEDs (e.g., P2 means 2mm apart). The closer your audience, the smaller the pixel pitch you need.
• Rule of Thumb: A comfortable viewing distance is roughly 1 meter for every 1 mm of pitch (e.g., a P2.5 screen is best viewed from 2.5 meters or further).
• Indoor: Typically use P1.8 to P3.9 for crisp text and close-up video.
• Outdoor: Typically use P4 to P10 for larger crowds and longer viewing distances.

3. Refresh Rate & Visual Performance
• For Live Events/Cameras: If you plan on streaming or taking photos, you need a high refresh rate (minimum 3,840 Hz up to 7,680 Hz) to avoid screen flickering, tearing, and camera banding.
• Contrast Ratio:A higher contrast ratio (e.g., 20000:1) provides deeper blacks and richer colors, which is especially important for indoor settings.

4. Screen Size and Aspect Ratio
• Aspect Ratio: Stick to the standard 16:9 aspect ratio to easily display standard video formats without stretching or black bars.
• Venue Proportions:Ensure the screen is large enough to be seen from the back row but doesn't completely dominate the room.

5. Minimum and maximum viewing distances
• Minimum viewing distance: can be calculated as pixel pitch x 750-1000. At this distance, a smooth image is observed. Closer inspection of the video will lead to a “decay” of the image into separate pixels. For example, for a LED screen with a pixel pitch of 10mm, the minimum viewing distance is 10mm x 1000 = 10m.
• Maximum viewing distance: The formula to calculate the maximum viewing distance is generally Screen Height x 20-30. For example, for a LED screen with a height of 4.56 meters, the distance will be 4.56m x 30 = 137m.
