How to calculate the signal cables for Giant LED Wall?
Calculating signal cables for a giant LED screen involves determining data cable types, evaluating maximum run lengths, and mapping the cable routing layout.
1. Determine Cable Types & Distances by applications
If you are assembling a large LED video wall using pre-built cabinets, you will use locking patch cables.• Within the Display: Use standard Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables with RJ45 or Ethercon connectors to daisy-chain the signal from cabinet to cabinet.
• Distance Limits: Maximum un-boosted run for a Cat5e/Cat6 data cable is 100 meters. If your control room is further away, use fiber optic cables or install signal repeaters every 100 meters.
• Between Processor and PC: Use standard HDMI, DVI, or DP (DisplayPort) cables, typically kept under 5 to 15 meters to prevent signal degradation.
2. Determine the Signal Cable Type by Distance
Choosing the right cable depends entirely on the distance between your video processor/media player and the physical LED screen.• Distance < 100 meters: Use standard, shielded CAT6a or CAT7 Ethernet cables. They are inexpensive and can handle the data loads required for massive 4K/8K walls. • Distance > 100 meters: Use Singlemode (OS2) or Multimode (OM3/OM4) Fiber Optic cables. Fiber eliminates electromagnetic interference (EMI) and signal loss, making it necessary for large venues, stadiums, or outdoor billboards. • Connection from Player to Processor: Use high-quality, active HDMI or DisplayPort cables for short distances (up to 10-15m), or Fiber Optic HDMI cables if your source is further away.
3. Calculate the Number of Signal Lines
A single controller output port cannot load an infinite number of pixels. You must split your giant LED wall into "mapping areas" based on the controller's processing capacity.• Find Port Capacity: Check the spec sheet for your sending/receiving card (e.g., NovaStar, Linsn). For example, many standard sending cards have a maximum loading capacity of 650,000 pixels per port.
• Calculate Screen Pixels: Multiply the screen's width by its height in pixels.
• Determine Number of Runs: Divide your total screen pixels by the maximum pixels a single port can handle.
Required Signal Cables=Total Screen Pixels/Pixels Supported Per Port
o Note: If this calculation results in 3.4, you must round up to 4 distinct signal cables/data ports.
4. Map the Data Routing Layout
Data on a giant LED Wall travels via daisy-chaining (looping from one cabinet to the next). Because data cables have hard length limits (100m for copper), your layout requires careful planning:• Zigzag Mapping: Data is patched from Cabinet 1 → 2 → 3 → 4. Most configuration software (like NovaLCT or Colorlight) allows you to map a custom "zigzag" or serpentine pattern so the video processor knows exactly where to route the image. • Redundancy (Optional but Recommended): For giant or critical mission screens, configure your cabling in a loop. Run a primary cable from Port A and a backup cable to the end of the chain. If one cable fails, the signal reverses from the end to keep the screen active. • Signal Repeaters: If your screen is too spread out and a CAT6 cable stretch is between 100m and 120m, install a Gigabit Network Switch or signal repeater to boost the signal without data loss.
5. Prevent Signal Interference
•Separate Power and Data: To Avoid Interference, do not run Ethernet cables in parallel with or right next to high-voltage AC power cables. Maintain at least a 30cm (12-inch) separation. • Shielding: Always use Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cables and shielded RJ45 connectors for outdoor environments, concerts, or near heavy machinery to prevent electromagnetic interference from distorting your giant display.FTV LED Screen Solutions
